03 – Volumetric Efficiency

Lesson Title – Volumetric Efficiency

  • Understand the significance of volumetric efficiency

Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of air that can be filled in a cylinder to its theoretical capacity. Volumetric Efficiency thus is a measure of the breathing efficiency of an engine. An engine with better breathing characteristics will thus make more power and torque. Which is why some engines from the factory are destined to make more power like say the 2JZ in the Toyota Supra or the Honda B16 or the Mitsubishi 4G92. While on the other hand engines from the same family such as the Mitsubishi 4G15 are not capable of making much power and torque.

Ultimately the goal of all performance tuning modifications is to increase the volumetric efficiency of the engine.
