01 – What is an engine?

Lesson Title – What is an Engine? ( From a ECU / Control System perspective )

  • How do we assume a simplified model of an engine for calibration considerations
  • What are the similarities between an air compressor and an IC engine

What exactly is an Engine? There are a lot of different ways to describe an IC engine, but when you are looking at it from an “ECU Perspective”, you could call an IC engine an Air Pump. This helps us understand the ECU behavior in a rather simple manner.

By looking at an engine as an air pump, it helps engine calibration engineers diagnose problems with the engine, imagine the sequence of events inside an engine easily and thereby develop calibrations for it.
